Early detection of osteoporosis:
POROUS GmbH is nominated for the Innovation Award Berlin Brandenburg 2023.
Osteoporosis is a chronic widespread disease that affects hundreds of millions of
people worldwide.
POROUS GmbH has developed an innovative ultrasound method that reliably
quantifies microstructural changes in the bone cortex and can enable early detection
of osteoporosis. In a pilot study, superiority of the POROUS procedure over the
current standard diagnostic method, DXA-BMD, was demonstrated. The goal of
developing POROUS is to enable targeted prevention and treatment through early
screening of osteopenia and osteoporosis, which reduces the risk of fractures.
“We are honored to be nominated for the Berlin Brandenburg Innovation Award. To
land among the final ten out of 111 applications is already a great recognition for us
of the work we have done. Our goal is to enable early detection of osteoporosis for
the first time with an accurate, cost-effective and X-ray-free ultrasound diagnosis of
fracture risk,” says Managing Director Dr.-Ing. Julia Eschenbrenner.
Fractures caused by osteoporosis result in 57 billion euros in health care costs,
individual suffering and loss of quality of life every year in Europe alone. A screening
program supported by health insurers and active prevention or therapy by patients,
could prevent up to 50 percent of fragility fractures. This would lead to annual
savings in healthcare costs of several billion euros.
The jury of the Berlin Brandenburg Innovation Award, chaired by Prof. Oliver
Günther, Ph.D., President of the University of Potsdam, selected the ten best
innovations in the capital region as nominees from 111 applications in the
competition for the Berlin Brandenburg Innovation Award. The award ceremony with
announcement of the winners will take place on November 24, 2023.
About the Innovation Award:

prize of the economy for the economy. Since it was first awarded in 1984 (since 1992
jointly with Brandenburg), more than 175 prize winners from over 4,450 applications
have been honored.
