Challenge

The numerous types of digital radiography devices can result in a wide range of radiation doses patients receive, from extremely low to extremely high. If the patient, and thus detector, is underexposed, it often necessitates a retake because the image is unclear. A more problematic situation occurs, when to assure a clear image, the detector is overexposed, resulting in needless extra radiation received by the patient.

Opportunity

With the EU Directive EURATOM 2013/59 (2018), radiologists and referring doctors are jointly responsible for the patient to get the correct examination with the lowest possible radiation. The IAEA, part of the UN, is actively educating people on the dangers of radiation, to create awareness and action plans for lower radiation exposure in general and in healthcare in particular. Also, the ESR has started a EUROSAFE call for action on safe imaging and radiation protection, which has been followed by most countries (AFROSAFE, ARABSAFE etc.)

Solution

The CrisperView image enhancement algorithm operates at the pixel level, dramatically reducing processing time. It can be  implemented on an image processor chip (FPGA chip) to enable even faster processing. This allows for images to be improved not only after an X-Ray is taken, but even in real-time, for example during image-guided surgery. The algorithm has the potential to reduce the radiation dose of diagnostic scans. High dose exposure of patients to radiation for the sake of image of quality, can be prevented, while maintaining the quality of the images. In cases of underexposure the algorithm improves the image quality, reducing the number of redo’s.

Status

The processor and algorithm have been tested with commercially available digital radiography system. The next step is validating the algorithm in realtime during image guided surgery.
