Challenge
Hospitals and Labs emit 4.4% of global emissions which is larger than aviation or shipping. If the sector were a country, it would be the fifth-largest polluting country in the world. Without any intervention, healthcare emissions are expected to grow by 3x between now and 2050. Lack of data and adequate tools prevent hospitals and other healthcare institutions from making informed decisions about emission reduction.
Opportunity
UK and Dutch Healthcare systems have pledged to be carbon neutral by 2045 and 2050 respectively. The current cost-based approach to measuring emissions doesn’t work for hospitals, requiring a more detailed approach for assessing clinical pathways and products.
Solution
Ecomedic provides a unique database and software tool designed to empower hospitals to significantly reduce operational emissions. Our platform assists sustainability stakeholders in healthcare by enabling rapid life cycle assessment (LCA) executions, pinpointing emission hotspots, and quantifying the impacts of alternative solutions. This not only paves the way for targeted, effective interventions that minimize emissions but also concurrently lowers the overall costs of products/services.
Status
Agreement for a pilot project with a large hospital chain in the US. Conversations with large European hospitals. Building and testing the database and software.
